DIY Guide to Property Cleaning along with Safety Tips
The best way to keep your home neat, organized, and nice-looking by doing a complete spring or fall cleaning is necessary. It is a great way to get rid of things that you no longer need and ensure deep cleaning in the house. While it is important to clean, it is also important to be safe while you are cleaning. Research has shown that 77 percent of accident related injuries occur in the home. When you are doing your fall or spring cleaning, there are a few safety tips that you should follow.
#1 Cleaning the Carpets
During your spring and fall cleaning, you should clean your carpets. Even if you have guests remove their shoes when they enter the home and if you are strict when it comes to eating and drinking in the rooms that are carpeted, they can still get dirty. Normal wear and tear can make the carpeting look dirty and dingy. Regular carpet cleaning can make the carpets look new again.
Safety Tip- When you are cleaning your carpets, you need to be careful when you are moving the heavy furniture. Avoid wearing flip flops or any shoes that won’t give your feet protection if you drop something on your toe. Also, use proper lifting techniques. You should keep your back straight and lift with your legs. This will prevent a back injury.
#2 Clean the Ceiling Fans and Cobwebs From Other High Surfaces
No matter how often you do a regular cleaning in your home, dust and debris can build up on the ceiling fans and in the corners of the ceilings. It can also accumulate on top of your hutch, bookcases, and any other high surfaces. When you do your spring or fall cleaning, you should make sure that you dust these areas.
Safety Tip 1- When cleaning high surfaces, you should use a step stool or a stepladder. Be sure not to lean too far on either side when standing on the ladder. To keep from getting hurt, you should move the ladder when necessary. You should also wear non-skid shoes when you are climbing the ladder. Fall prevention is very important when you are using a step ladder when cleaning.
Safety Tip 2- It is a good idea to wear a mask when cleaning dusty surfaces. This is especially true if you are allergic to dust.
#3 Wash Your Floors
Although you wash your floors when you are doing your regular cleaning, you should wash them while you are doing your spring or fall cleaning as well. While washing your floors, you should make sure that you get underneath the baseboards and inside them as well. These are areas where dust tends to build up.
Safety Tip: Wet floors can be very slippery. When your floors are wet, it is important that you and your family stay off of the floors until they are completely dry.
#4 Washing the Windows
Spring and fall cleaning is the best time to clean both the inside and the outside of the windows. You should clean both the inside and the outside of the windows to ensure that they are completely clean and free of streaks.
Safety Tip 1- When cleaning the outside of the windows, you should be very careful on the ladder. If you have someone available, ask them to hold the ladder when you are cleaning. A fall from the second story can result in a very serious injury.
Safety Tip 2- When cleaning the outside of the windows, you should use a window squeegee. You should use a squeegee with a telescopic handle, so you don’t need to stretch your arms as much.
#5 Clean Out the Bedroom Closets
It is a good idea to clean out all of the bedroom closets during your spring and fall cleaning. You and your family may have clothing, shoes, and other items in their closet that they no longer need and are just taking up space. These are things that can be thrown away. Fall and spring cleaning are also a great time to clean out your children’s toy box. If there are toys that they are too old for or no longer play with, they can be thrown away or donated. Cleaning out the toy box will make room for more toys.
Safety Tip 1- When you are carrying boxes and bags full of items to be thrown away or that are going to be donated, be sure not to carry anything too heavy, especially if you are going down the stairs. It takes just one misstep for you to take a dangerous fall.
Safety Tip 2- When you are working on cleaning the closets and the toy box, be sure not to leave any bags, boxes, or other clutter off of the stairs. You should also keep the landings and walkways clean. It is very easy to trip over something when you are rushing around trying to get your cleaning finished.
#6 Cleaning the Kitchen and the Bathrooms
While you likely clean your kitchen and bathrooms during your regular cleaning, you should do a deeper cleaning during your spring cleaning. This includes removing everything from the counter tops and washing them down thoroughly. You should also make sure to clean everything that you remove from the counter tops. You should also be sure to clean the floors at the base of the toilet and the bathtub.
Safety Tip 1-Cleaning supplies can create dangerous fumes. You should leave the window open when you are cleaning. Also, you should never mix ammonia and bleach together. When combined, it can create toxic fumes. If you are unsure if you can mix two products, don’t. When in doubt, use just one product.
Safety Tip 2- To protect your hands, you should always wear rubber gloves. Many cleaning products can be very harsh on the skin.
When it comes to spring and fall cleaning, it should be done thoroughly and more importantly, safely.
