This stitch works great for arm knitting because it eliminates the large holes! Some thing everyone has been asking about.
Here is the video tutorial.
With the Linen stitch you are knitting one stitch, then moving the skein and working yarn to the back of the work and slipping one stitch. Then you move the skein and working yarn back to the front of the work and knit one stitch, repeating the knit 1 slip one pattern until the end of every row.
Follow along with the video to see what I mean. It’s so simple, yet makes a beautiful, tight knit stitch.

Is binding off different with the linen stitch?
Same as the regular knit stitch.
AWESOME. Thank you so much for posting this! I have been trying FOREVER to do linen stitch with arm knitting. Never would have thought of using the ends of the same skein of yarn. Love it. Curious… what you have made using this stitch?
So far only a pillow.
I love this! How many stitches would you suggest casting on to do a blanket in Linen stitch?
I did 20 here so at least 40 if your using the same yarn. That would probably give you a throw size blanket.
How many skeins of yarn do you think I would need to do a throw blanket?
This depends on how large you want it. If it’s a throw size, then maybe 6 skeins using 2 strands at one time. Buy extra and then you can return them if you don’t use them all.
I just want to say thanks, your tutorials helped me begin knitting! I love this stitch and your tutorial is super easy to follow. But I’m having a problem that at the end of my first row I’m left with a super large loop on the last stitch that will not tighten up. And when I go to begin my 2nd row I’m left with a hanging stitch. Any advice? Am I pulling my other stitches too tight at the beginning or not casting on tight enough? Thanks for sharing all your work!
Tanya
Make sure your turning your stitches the correct way before placing it on your other arm that way they tighten properly.
So you think the arm knit linen stitch is tight enough for a baby blanket?
Definitely
How many skeins should I plan on using to make a blanket?
I’m thinking of making a blanket. If you can answer any of these questions it would greatly help! 🙂 How do you add a new ball of yarn, what were the measurements for what you knit in the video, and how much yarn did it take to make that much?
In the video I used one skein of yarn, to add a new skein you just tie a basic knot which you can learn how to do in my 45 minute blanket video. If you want to make a blanket I’d purchase 6 skeins for a lap or throw size blanket.
Love this blanket!!! Thank you for tutorial!! Must it start in middle of skein? Could we start with 2 skeins together?
Hi,
I was just wondering when you want to add a new skein of yarn how you would tie it on. Wouldn’t the end of your yarn be In a loop? So could you simply cut the loop to add the new skein? Sorry if I just answered my own question just wondering if that method would work?
Thanks,
It would be in a loop. You can leave it in a loop though. No need to cut it.
This is my first attempt at knitting – or anything like it, really. I really want to do this linen stitch because of how full it is. But I’m so confused about using more than one skein. I want to make blankets, and I have the yarn already, but I can’t figure out how to use more than one skein for a blanket. If you (or anyone else!) could explain it in beginners terms, that would just totally make my week!
Just pull a strand from each ball of yarn. It can be pulled from the outside of the skein since it’s easier to find. Then you just knit with the two strands at the same time as if they are one strand.
Hi Maggie,
Love your tutorials! Thanks for sharing!
I have a couple of questions. Can I use the linen stitch for a cowl? How many stitches would I need to cast on? 20? And 20rows?
Can I still use one skein for a cowl using this stitch?
Thanks
Hi Michelle! Here is a tutorial for you. https://www.simplymaggie.com/diy-arm-knit-linen-stitch-cowl
What weight of yarn did you use in this and how many yards were in your skeen of yarn
Super bulky yarn with the strands doubled up and the skein had approximately 120 yards.
I really want to make a blanket…I’ve noticed that a lot of people were asking how to add a skein of yarn because this is started with just one skein. Could you start with 2 skeins so it would be easier to add a new skein if needed? And if you start with two skeins are you throwing BOTH balls of yarn over at the SAME time?
I have made this cowl 3 times… love the stitch and the way it comes out! My issue however is the skein of yarn turns into a tangle of knots! Took forever to straighten it out to be able to finish. The second time I used 2 skeins instead of pulling from both ends of one. Still a tangled mess from moving yarn back and forth over work. Did you have this problem? Any tips to avoid this from happening again? Thank you!
would you suggest using one or two skeins of Bernat Blanket Yarn? The skein has 220 yards of yarn. I plan on making 3 blankets for Christmas, and I am just trying to figure out how many skeins I need to buy. Thank you for the great tutorials!! Thanks for sharing!!
How many stitches would I need to make a 40″ x 60″ blanket? Also can you still arm knit with that many stitches?
Thanks,
Damon
What kind of yarn did you use for this work?
