Meet Amanda Bassetti! The owner of Simply Maggie:

aboutIt may seem a little confusing, my name being Amanda and my blog being called Simply Maggie. Maggie is what my grandparents have called me since I was a toddler. So I thought it fit!

I was married at the age of 18 (in 2007), we bought our first house right after I turned 22 (in 2010) and my husband and I have learned how to remodel our home since then. Together we have learned our favorite home style and have learned to work as a team to create a home that we both love and can find peace and comfort in.

We take on new projects every year and I will be sharing them along the way! I also take on projects myself  like teaching myself to knit and arm knit as well as gardening, new recipes, unique DIY country and cottage  décor and so much more.

Hello Peg! Thank you so much for reaching out to me. I am interested in being a part of your book! I apologize for not replying sooner as I have been fighting some type of flu this week. As soon as my voice is a little better I will be giving you a call (most likely by tomorrow, Monday at the latest). Meanwhile here is my email: amanda_bassetti@yahoo.com. Hi Peg, I was hoping I could still get in touch with you about the book on Arm Knitting. I know that it’s been a while since I heard from you last. The “Flu” ended up turning into multiple doctors and hospital visits. I am now on the mend and focusing on my blog and videos again. I was hoping I could call the number you provided this week some time. I look forward to hearing back from you.

Hi Maggie! Love your video tutorials for the blanket and scarf!! I picked it up in no time and have been very satisfied with the way my blankets and scarves have turned out. I am wondering if your book includes instructions for the button cuff and the hand crocheted blanket in 1 hour? What other arm knitting tutorials are in your book? Love your blogs and products 🙂

Is there any way you have a written directions with pictures? At the beginning of the video a pop up comes up that you did your thumb wrong and that where it goes very bad for me….what does that mean. i special ordered the yarn and really want to make this scarf for a gift. Hi,
Thank you for the arm knitting how-to. It was very helpful. I am having a problem getting the final piece even. i generally have one side that is longer than the other although I keep the stitches even. Maybe it is how I am finishing the piece?
I also was wondering if you would share where you got the tabletop display bust you use to display the finished scarf.
Thank you again,

Hi there. Loved your hand knitting video using three strands, very cute! Had kind of a dumb question- how would you incorporate another color? Would I just use another color skein when I get ready to start another row? I’m going to attempt to hand knit my FIRST blanket. I don’t know how to sew or use a sewing machine, seems complicated, but have been wanting to take on a new hobby. Something that’s relaxing and long lasting. So hand knitting it is! Any advise you can give on adding a 2nd color would be great.
Thanks Maggie.

Hi Maggie and assorted pets who own you!

I love your stuff and wandered around the yarn store today trying to decide which project to tackle and with which yarn. I finally came home with 2 balls of Bernat Blanket (1 in turquoise and the other in vintage white). They are Super Bulky (6). I really like your latest arm knit blanket and was wondering if you could suggest a pillow (either arm knit or knitted with needles) that has that same “organic” look. I have searched the web and I find you projects the most appealing.

Thanks for the postings and for any help you may be able to offer.

Don’t bind off too tight because it will come out as a narrow end. If you watch in my videos I don’t really tighten the stitches all the way while binding off.

It might be that it HAS been discontinued… and if that is so, would you mind recommending another type to use for arm knitting??

Hi Amanda! I hope you are doing well. 🙂 I’ve been using your arm knitting tutorials and videos and I’m really pleased with it! It’s so much fun. 🙂

I was wondering if you could talk a little bit about the Couture Jazz yarn that you use in your new pattern arm knitting blanket video? I’m having a hard time finding a similar yarn as I’m entirely new to this and am not sure how to compare yarns. I HAVE been watching the Premiere Yarns site but it hasn’t had enough of the colours I want for my blanket project for an xmas gift, and other yarns seem to be much less fluffy than the Couture Jazz you use – so my holes are quite big, and it’s not much of a cozy blanket if that makes sense.

Are there any details you can give me on the Couture Jazz and what other types of yarn would work the same? Brands or even terms that would help me find similar at a yarn store? Your blanket comes out looking so thick and fluffy, and that’s really what I want!

Thank you so much in advance. 🙂

Hi Amanda,
I am obsessed with arm knitting, crafts, and with your blog. I recently made a blanket for my mom for this Christmas and it turned out great, but my only concern was it’s holes were bigger than what I preferred. I know this happens when you don’t do it tight enough, but I did it pretty tight. I don’t know, but the holes in my scarves aren’t as big as they were in my blanket. If you can give me any tips on this, I would love to make it even better the next time!
– Haylie

Reply
Maggie January 1, 2016 at 3:58 pm

Hi Haylie, using really think yarn helps keep the holes looking smaller. When knitting a blanket the holes can get a bit bigger because it moves up your arm which is bigger than your wrist. Keeping the stitches as tight as possible is the only tip to prevent this.

Hi Maggie, I just watched your video on arm knitting a blanket in 45min. I have a couple of questions though. My son and his wife have asked me to make one for them in queen size. Your’s was 18 stitches cast ons for the afghan size, I can’t grow longer arms so how do I more than double that in width and for that size project how many skeins of yarn would I need? Also, what would be the tail length? A video for this size project would be wonderful.

Reply
Maggie February 22, 2016 at 7:51 am

Hello. You could make a couple of blankets and “sew” them together using the same color yarn. I don’t have measurements or conversions of on how big the blanket should be and how much yarn you would need. That would be something you’d have to calculate.

Reply
Ms. I May 7, 2016 at 9:06 pm

Hi Amanda — I’m a first timer on this arm knitting. I’ve tried it about 3 times and had to keep restarting due to the yarn tangling and twist. I read its best to roll the skein in a ball first, with the working end pulled from the inside hole. The best I got was on the 5th row, then the yarn twisted and tangled. As I was unraveling, more yarn kept loosening from the inside hole making my small twisted pile to a huge blob of tangles and twists. I have read of keeping the skeins apart as you knit, put in empty coffee cans and puncture a hole on the lid for the yarn to come out, put in ZipLoc bags and cut a small hole for the yarn to come out. But it did not say where to cut the hole. Whether the bottom corner or right center of the plastic bag. Regardless, I’ve tried it and it still tangled and twisted.

I am using a super thick yarn, 9 and 10.5 and arm knitting at three strands at a time.

So if you have advice how to arm knit dealing with yarn twisting and tangleing that you have to unravel as you go along, or make a tutorial video about this – it would be great.

So far the huge blob of twisted yarn has taken me about a week, depending how much time. I started with first two full 8 hours, and 3-4 hours a day and lesser as the yarn are all unraveled. I’ve seen on eBay huge blobs of twisted yarns that people just leave, don’t want to deal with unraveling it, they sell the raveled yarn who have a lot of time, thus they get all these skeins to play with.

Hope you can help. Hopefully one day I will finish the big ball of skeins (3) to one beautiful, soft blanket. I wanted the thick yarn you use but it’s a bit expensive and I cannot manage it let alone 11 skeins. Thanks for your time.

Hiya, I wondered if you could do a tutorial on knitting chunky Christmas stockings as I’d love to make some for my sisters this year. Thanks.

I was wondering if you have directions anywhere for the button cuff shown on the infinity chunky scarf. It makes the scarf very special. Thank you

What are some things to look for in when purchasing yarn to be sure it’s a good quality yarn? Are there any certain fibers like wool, acrylic, etc. that are better than others or does it depend on the type of project. I have just recently decided to take up knitting and going soon to purchase stuff so I am completely going in blind knowing nothing.

Hi Maggie-
Where do you get your giant wool? Does it have to be felted or unfelted?

Maggie

Thank you for your infinity scarf tutorial. I have never knitted before but wanted to surprise my wife with a homemade gift for our anniversary. I followed your youtube video and I am very satisfied with the results. I think my next adventure may be one of those super bulky blankets. Thank you again and keep inspiring more people.

Hello Maggie, on your 15 min chunky scarf video, do both tails at the end get weaved in along the seam? You showed one but wondering if the other tail is just cut or weaved in same the way the first one was. Thanks and love your tutorials!

I only have medium weight yarn and I have a lot of it. Is there any way to make super bulky arm knit infinity scarfs with medium yarn?

Hi! I tried following your video for making a arm knit blanket in less than an hour and got so lost once you started making the second row. I am not sure if I was doing something wrong or what but I tried several times before having to give up for the night. I would love to be able to arm knit a blanket for my family members, especially my grandmother who is always knitting blankets for us. When I tried the second row the stitch would become really lose and I could not get it to stay tight on my left arm. Any tips? I am using Stitch Studio by Nicole Chateau Super Bulky Yard, doubled. Please any advice would be great!

Hi Maggie,
I love your videos. You are AMAZING. I am looking for your button buckle pattern but can’t find it. I tried clicking on the picture itself but nothing happens.
Also, I know that you are very talented and I am looking to learn how to arm knit with the new Bernat Blanket big yarn but can’t seem to find anything. Would you be willing to create a video on this.
Thank you so… much. Aline

Hello – I just found your video on finger knitting a blanket through Pinterest. I am a beginner and just found out I’m going to be a first-time grandma in June 2017. I would love to be able to knit a baby blanket or two and was wondering how many rows I would need. In the video, I think you used 30 but obviously that might be too big. 🙂 Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Maggie! You are the BEST! I have started the arm knitting and pulled my sister into the adventure with me. We are both making blankets with the Premier Couture Jazz yarn for Christmas gifts. I do not know what we are doing wrong but our blankets are coming out somewhat skinny and long…..more of a rectangular shape. We cast on the 18 stitches and our holes are not large at all. Any ideas on what we are doing wrong? Thank you so much for all of the fun and inspiration!

P.S. I am contemplating trying the linen stitch blanket so wish me luck!

I’m trying to make your 45 min arm blanket, but you have the size 6 couture jazz yarn and I have the size 7, because that’s what the link took me to. Anyway will that change my gauge, will I still cast on 18 stitches and 32 rows for. 5×3 blanket. I’m panicking as I am making this for a Xmas present and I can’t seem to figure this out.

Help!!!!!

Could you tell me how to get the pattern that is shown on 23 insanely cleaver arm knits were a person is standing on a rug or blanket and another two draped in pale colours. I will pay for the pattern and could you tell me where to get the yarn.

Amanda,
I “LOVE YOUR DIY Website. I am hooked on finger knitting and arm knitting. I have an issue that I was hoping you could help me with. I have attempted to Arm Knit a blanket 5 times already and had to start over each time because the first knit seems to not want to stay close to the other hand and the 2 yarn lines in the middle while transferring from the right hand to the left had to attempt to complete the first row is aweful!!! The 2 lines of yarn in between twist up and the keep stretching further and further from my right hand.

This looks so easy and I am bound and determined to learn how to arm knit a blanket and learn other arm knitting styles. i REALLY LOVE THE “LINEN STITCH” but it never works out for me. Even if I go slow the yarn pulls to far from the right hand.

I NEED HELP!!

Please email or call me at: Michliam@yahoo.com or call my cell at (616) 368-7623.

I really look forward to hearing back from you.

Respectfully,

Michelle

I love your log and can’t wait to try all of the projects. I arm knitted an infinity scarf for my best friend yesterday and she loved it. My question is are there any of your projects that are for spring/summer or can be adapted for spring/summer? I’m just learning but I don’t want to wait 6 months to try them out. Thanks so much and I wish you all the success in the world.

Hi Maggie, I tried making the arm blanket as well as the cowl neck scarf using Couture Jazz from Premier Yarns. First, I noticed that to do the number of rows and length on both the blanket and the scarf, I didn’t seem to use up the amount of yarn that you said you had used on your videos. I also noticed that your yarn seemed to be thicker and held together better than mine. So, I looked at the wrapper on my yarn. Everything is the same as yours on the video EXCEPT it says it is Jumbo #7 weight, not #6 super chunky like the ones you use in your video. I tried looking online the the Couture Jazz #6, but all they sell is the #7. Do you think that is what is making the difference? The blanket and scarf I made are so floppy and weak compared to the video.

Hi Maggie! I contact you because I’ve noticed that your are selling my patterns on your Etsy shop and featuring them as your own in your blog. (Baby Romper, Diaper Cover and Baby Booties). As you can see on my website, my work is protected under a Creative Commons license that clearly states that:

On this basis, I have to ask you please to stop selling my patterns and remove the post from your blog, since in both cases it violates the conditions of the license by not properly recognizing the authorship of the patterns (and idea) through mentions and links to the original source. As the license makes clear, you may not use the material for commercial purposes. (Etsy shop)
I trust that you understand this situation and proceed to eliminate this content as soon as possible. By the way, I believe from your blog that you are a great knitter and can do it great without these patterns.
Thanks in advance!

Hi Maggie! I wasn’t sure where you would read my comment, so I’m just commenting on a bunch of your posts! I’m a bit confused about how many skeins I should use to make an arm knit blanket. I like the length of your 50″ by 60″ blanket, and I noticed that you used 11 skeins just like in your 45 minute arm knit blanket. That blanket seemed to be a lot smaller than this one. Is 11 skeins accurate for this size of blanket? Thank you!

Amanda: Thank you very much for getting me interested in arm knitting. I am not a big fan of the large stiches, but I do like the design. I modified the knitting a little to get the stich size where I liked it better. I have made 3 blankets from Benet #5 Bulky yarn and have a couple of questions. How do you keep the finished blanket from growing, mainly from side to side. I reduced the stich numbers side to side to 80, using 1/2 inch, 3 foot long needles. When I finish the blanket it is the correct size for a King bed. One week later, it has overgrown both sides by 4 inches. I am considering anchoring a back sheet like that used on a quilt. I haven’t talked myself into doing that yet. I would like to get your views on it first.

I have about 6 or 8 skeins of the Jazz couture left over from the 45 min blanket tutorial.. would that be enough for the floor pillow? Or do I need to get 2 large balls of jazz?
Thank you!!

Hello Maggie,

Until yesterday I did not know crochet could be done without a needle. I came across your videos by chance whilst searching how to knit a blanket by hand. I am determined to crochet a blanket for me but am finding hard to get hold of the lion brand thick and quick yarn here in the UK.Is there another alternative? You have used 3 strands for your blanket. Is there a restriction in how many strands, can I use 1 only?
Your advice and guidance on how to choose yarn and how many strands to use in line with the thickness of the yarn would be greatly appreciated.

I also am having the same problem with hand knitting. What size yarn can I arm knit with?

Thank you so much and eagerly awaiting for your response… 🙂
