Create this master piece in just a couple of hours with arm knitting!
This is a teen to adult size blanket. To make a child size blanket, simply cast on fewer stitches and knit fewer rows on the body. I suggest casting on around 15 stitches for the body and knitting around 20 rows.
Approximate measurements for adult size:
Blanket body measures 42″ long. Blanket fin measures 17″ long. Total length of blanket from top of body to bottom of fin is 59″
Here’s what you’ll need.
Materials:
7 Skeins of Couture Jazz yarn in the color Lavender
1 Skein of Couture Jazz yarn in the color Shy Blush
1 Skein of Couture Jazz yarn in the color Celadon
Pattern:
If you’d like to download the written pattern in PDF form it is available on etsy.

I’m pretty excited for this tutorial!
How’s the video coming?
I want to make this for my daughter – she is only a few months old but I love this so much that I can’t wait to make it! How many skeins would you suggest for making it in a child’s size?
Hi there. I added a variation for a child’s size blanket. If you have anymore questions feel free to ask.
Your tutorial is perfect timing for me! I have been looking online for a mermaid blanket to purchase for my daughter. Your video has inspired me to try and arm knit her one! It will be my first attempt, so we’ll see how it goes. You really make it look so easy, but I know it’s gonna be a little more difficult for me. I was wondering if you have ever used the heliotrope sparkle for any of your projects. I think I would like to try it, but I’m wondering if it’s itchy, since it does have that sparkle thread running throughout. My daughter has crazy sensitive skin, and if it is itchy at all, she wouldn’t be able to use the blanket. But I can’t seem to find any stores around here that carry it, so that I can feel it for myself.
Congratulations on your new baby! Enjoy every minute! Unfortunately mine are 22 and 27, but I would love to do it all over again, if I could!
And one last note, great job on your house renovations – everything looks fantastic!
Thanks for the videos!
Thank you so much for the kind words! I’m glad you have enjoyed my tutorials!
I have used heliotrope and I have some of the other sparkle couture jazz in my stash and it’s not itchy. I too have very sensitive skin, but it seems that yarn would be ok for her in a blanket.
Do you have the approximate dimensions? I want to make sure the part where the legs go will be long enough.
Hi. Yes, I did add the measurements.
Can you use any type of yarn for this?

Is there any alternative yarn you might suggest that may be a little cheaper? I want to make these for my nieces but it’s kind of expensive for buy enough to make them all a blanket.
Hi Maggie,
I’ve recently discovered your site (which I love!!) & I’m in the process of hand crocheting a blanket for my sister in law for Christmas. I would love to make this mermaid blanket for my niece, but I’m just wondering if it’s possible to do it as a hand crochet, rather than arm knit. I have 6 month old twins & I get interrupted constantly so I’m not finding the time to do the arm knitting (as I can put the crocheting down when i need to 😉 ). I also find the hand crocheting much easier! Thanks!
How long is one skein of the yarn?
How many strands of bulky yarn can i do thos woth of i dont jazz yarn? And how many yards do you think i would need? I love all your tutorials!
Hi Maggie, I want to make a mermaid tail for my 3 year old cousin, but I think 7 skeins of the lavender might be too much. So how many of the lavender skeins do you think I would need for a 3 1/2 foot child? Please get back to me as soon as you can. Thank you!
[…] heart gift that will get it’s fair share of love. For the mermaid lover’s out there, here’s the link to one of those super cute mermaid tail blankets that can also be arm knitted in no time […]
If I’m making one for a child would I also decrease on the fun or keep that the same?
Hi Maggie,
Love your tutorials, thank you for doing them.
What can I substitute for the couture jazz yarn? I can not find this in stores here in Ontario and online prices and availability is not working for me.
Look forward to hearing from you.
Thanks
Is the tail supposed to get shorter and shorter when you cast on?
How did you get the bottom of the fin to have the shape it does? Mine is straight across.
I would love to knit this however I can’t seem to find the wool at my local craft store, is there another type/thickness you would recommend? Also I would love to know the length of wool used in total. thank you
I’m having trouble finding the couture jazz yarn for the arm knitted mermaid tail. Do you have a suggestion for a chunky bulky yarn that I can substitute?
Do you know how wide the opening is for the legs to go in? I’m making it for my mom and we’re both bigger in the hip and leg area so I just wanted to know if I should cast on more than 18 stitches at the start, I just really want to make sure it’ll fit! Thank you so much for making this tutorial!
HI! How many things of yarn will I need for someone whom is 70″ long?!?
Hello Maggie, Its been a while but im back to a project, love this mermaid blanket so gonna give it a shot for my 2 yr old grand-daughter, Congrats on being a mommy, its the best gift God could ever give us. I hv 3 grown, and now my 1st gb. nothing like it in the world. so when casting on and doing the body i saw where you said to cast on 15 st and only 20 rows is the rest of the pattern the same as far as when your binding off. when your doing the b-o 2 then 1 then 2 just wanna make sure i dont mess this up. lol anyway hope you hv a blessed and merry Christmas..
Hi, I can not seem to buy the pattern on etsy, am I clicking the wrong link? Sitting at home with a broken ankle looking for new crafts! I must try this!!
Thank you,
Heather

Hi Maggie! In the video said would post the cost to make on blog…must be overlooking it coz i can’t find it. How much did it cost to make it? I want to make one for my daughter.
Hi maggie would love to knit the mermaid tail blankets for grandaughters for xmas were can i buy the wool from thank you
Hi! I’m curious as I watch this video. You seem to put your hand through from the back of the new stitch at the beginning of each row, and then for the rest of the row, your hand goes through the stitch from the front to the back as you put it on your arm. I’ve noticed this for every row. Do you do this on purpose? Thanks!
Hi. Love this. I am going to be making 4 blankets for my daughters and one mermaid one for my granddaughter. She will be 8 mos at Christmas time. For the mermaid how many skeins would I need of each color for the child size? I’m trying to only give diy gifts this year hoping to save on money. What have been your best prices on the yarn? And…how many for a blanket that will be about 5ft long? Thank you so much for your time!
How wide is the blanket, and what is the full width before it’s put together to make the front and back? Trying to get dimensions to plan for yarn needs!
