So you use 2 things of yarn and about how much of it? I went to the store today but only bought 1. I missed or forgot the part where you said that you double it. So I’m trying to see if I could split this roll up or if I should just go buy another one.
I used two at once but didn’t use the all of either one. You may be able to get away with just one:) It may just be a tiny bit shorter which shouldn’t be a huge deal.
I love this! I can’t wait to try it. In the video it looked like you were only using one string that was looped to start. I was confused about how and where you used two.

Hi used a preferred colour of wool to make this but it wasn’t bulky like was supposed to be (I wasn’t sure because I lost the tag) and it ended up looking messy . I have found ball of the same yarn and I am wondering if can use this as well to make the scarf (make it bulky some how?) , even if it takes longer. Thank you 🙂
I think if you pick one end in the center and end which is out side of yarn ball you don’t have to buy two yarn balls.
Yes this is true with some yarn. I did however try it with one skein of yarn recently and it wasn’t anywhere near enough. So just make sure you buy the correct yardage. 🙂
How many yardage is each ball you have used? I only bought one, and its 108, if I unwind and double this will it be enough?? Thanks!
I did exactly that…109″ of yarn and worked of both ends to double it. I made my six stitches wide. I made my first last night and it was plenty long. I doubled it around my neck and the shortest look was probably 6 inches below my neck with the other look falling below the first.
Hello. Yes, use any yarn that says bulky or super bulky on the back of the package. That way it’s fuller and the holes appear smaller.

In the photos it sure looks like you used 8 cast on stitches. I started with 12 like you had said, and ended up with what looked like the beginnings of a blanket! I tore it apart, and started over with 6.

You’re very welcome. I didn’t count rows, I just measured by wrapping the scarf around my neck and when it was comfortable I the binded off.

I was curious as to how long the scarf is in the picture actually is? The first one I made was way too big and the second one still seems really bulky, which I know it is supposed to be, I am just concerned it is too bulky? I absolutely love making them! About how much yarn did you use? And how long should the tail be to start with? I’ve tried but the tail is always too short.
I used about 3/4 of each skein and for the tail, start out with 3 ft. If that’s still too short start over and make it longer:)

Charlene – The Download button you are looking at is part of an ad that has nothing to do with Maggie’s scarf, unfortunately. This scarf is fantastic! I was hoping to ask for more details about how much yarn you used for your cowl, but I see from the other comments that you no longer have the yarn label. Could you provide a measurement for the width/length of the cowl? With this information I could “swatch” and calculate how much yarn I would need. (I have some lovely handspun bulky yarn but am not sure I have enough for the project.) Many thanks!
From looking at another label from a similar yarn it says 120 yards. I used 2 skeins (but I only used a little over half from each skein). So anything around that length should work:) Hope this helps!!

I just realized I have some super bulky left over from a hat & scarf i made. It’s a whole skein and it’s huge. bernat baby something in baby pink. Cool, I can save this site and watch the video later and have fun when I won’t have to stop for anything, since I can’t really imagine what I’d use for a st holder!

I apologize. I don’t have written instructions as that would take a while to type up. I recommend watching both videos a few times and just try it. 🙂 As far as the yarn, if you go to the craft store to purchase some just look at the back of the yarn package and it will say what weight the yarn is (fine, medium, bulky, super bulky) Try to stick to bulk or super bulky. And I’m not quite sure what you mean by folding?

Yes, you just leave the yarn attached and when your scarf is long enough you bind off the scarf and then cut the yarn like I explain at the end of the video:)

Has anyone tried this with a size 4 medium yarn? I would like to use the yarn I have at home but wonder if this only works with really think yarn (because I am struggling with it). I am also curious as to how it would look with a smaller gauge yarn.
Hello. It definitely looks best with bulky or super bulky yarn. But you can practice with the yarn you have at home and once you have it down just undo it and purchase yarn that would look better:)

I use two balls of yarn at one time and pull one strand of yarn from each ball.:)
If I’m doing something that doesn’t take much yarn like a scarf or cowl what I do, which is another option to using two balls, is pull out the centre-pull yarn end and the outside yarn end and use both ends of the skein at once until I meet in the middle. This is a really good option for a bit less wide 6-8 row infinity scarves or cowls because of the shorter length. 🙂

Great video and idea. I agree knitting a scarf the conventional way takes to long. I have also have started many and have lost interest. I am definitely going to do this. Can’t wait for the Afghan video. How did you come up with this idea? Wish I would of thought of this. Ingenious!
I don’t understand how to cast on this way. I learned to just twist the working yarn. Which works I think… But my biggest issue is going from arm to arm. When I pull it tight I end up with a long random string that is attached to the first loop but it isn’t the tail. The tail is still hanging so I then have 3 pieces. Also, the last loop won’t pull tight when I move it over. I don’t know how I am messing this up but I really want to make a scarf for my mom for her birthday!

I made 3 scarves and I love the way they turned out but I am wanting to try something a little smaller than my arms but not small needles. Do you have any suggestions?
I bet you could use a length of PVC pipe at whatever size you want.
I’m sure that would work as well. I have seen that before where they put duck tape on the ends of the pipe. But if you don’t want to purchase that then your arms work great!

That was a great tutorial!! I just made one in under an hour! I took apart an unfinished scarf buried in a drawer so I didn’t have the right yarn but it came out great. Thanks for the video.
Love this! I mastered the first part, but I am having trouble on the second part where you switch it to the other hand. I am able to switch it, but when I pull on the working yarn there is a cluster of yarn in the middle that I’m not sure what to do with.
It will look like a little bit of a mess each time you switch to the other arm but just try leaving it loose and going on to knitting the next stitch until you have it figured out. Once you have it figured out you can start it over and begin tightening by pulling on the working yarn. Hope this helps! It’s tough to explain when you can’t see if something is being done wrong.

Hello! I used Wool Ease Thick and Quick in the color Linen I believe. Any super bulky yarn or bulky yarn works best. That one and Bernat Roving yarn are my favorites for this project.

Great video! I don’t know how to knit with needles (I’m a crocheter), but now I can knit with my arms! I didn’t have any bulky yarn in my stash, so I used three strands, two strands of Lion Brand Homespun yarn and one strand of worsted weight yarn. It turned out so awesome, I’m going to have to make another tomorrow!
Ok I feel a little confused I dunno how to even get started I bought two balls of yarn same color size everything. But when u say you are taking strands from both balls??? I see in the video you have them folded over to make a half circle?? Do u use one ball for the tail and the other for the scarf itself? I understand everything in the tutorial except the first few steps on getting started like as soon as u open the balls of yarn. Could u please help me thanks
Simply pull a strand of yarn from each ball and knit with them as if they’re one strand. Make your slip knot about 3 feet in and begin casting on.
not gonna lie, this took me a while to figure out. I had to redo it a few times before I felt I was ready to end it. This was also my very first attempt at any sort of knitting, and I must say, I am very pleased with the end result. It was supposed to be a cowl, but I put a couple extra lines in and it was a bit too big. Now it is a nice sweater-like shawl.

I really enjoyed making this scarf, and it came out beautiful! My only problem was that for the life of me I couldn’t comprehend the “casting on” part of the project! I am an accomplished knitter, this was a total mental block!! After 2 hours of trying, I knew I would have to figure out an easier way……I knitted my 12 stiches on to a Pringle can, then transfered them to my arm!!! It worked like a charm! Knitting and casting off were very easy!!! Thanks Maggie for sharing your creative project!!!

Would it work out okay if I used just regular, fuzzy yarn: Lion’s Brand but the one that is bulky and fuzzy? Also, how long did you let your scarf get (to let it wrap around twice) and you used 12 loops on your arms instead of 6?

This is so much fun…I have made two scarfs,,However I have a problem. Sometimes I don’t start a project because my kids are around. I am afraid the will need me and my arms are tied up in yarn. What is a good way to stop and keep your place so it is easy to pick it back up and start again. I was thinking of knitting onto a paper towel roll,,,but not sure if that would work…Any advice
Haha, Well the best thing you can do is just make sure you have the half hour to at least get it knitted and then you can sew the ends some other time. But if you really have to take a break there isn’t really a quick way to take it off of your arms. What I did was find a piece of electrical wire which I transferred all of my stitches onto and closed into a loop so that I wouldn’t lose any stitches. Hope that helps! 🙂

This looks very interesting! I am making scarves for a project and it would speed things up considerably.
I hope at some point there will be about 20 still pictures showing the tricky details like casting on and swapping the yarn from one arm to another. That way it’s possible to look at just what you need for as long as you need to.

Hello there! When you purchase your yarn look on the back of the package to make sure it’s bulky or super bulky. Once you’re ready to start your scarf pull a strand of yarn from the center of each ball and use them both at one time as if they are one strand. Hope this helps!
You can also wind a center pull ball, and then pull one strand from the center and one strand from the outside of the ball, holding them together as if they were one strand.

Hi this is a wonderful tutorial but for some reason when I do the stitching it seems to look much too loose! I don’t know how else to explain it or how to fix it but I also don’t understand how you pull the stitch tight? What part of the yarn are you pulling? The working yarn?
Pull the working yarn to tighten. But on the first stitch that you knit on each arm you have to tighten it by pulling the working yarn and pushing the “knot” part of the stitch up at the same time.
I bought one ball (skein) of “Loops & Threads – Cozy Wool”, which is 90 yards. I think the color is called “fleece”, it is a creamy white. I unrolled it and folded it together in the middle to start with the two strands in the very beginning.
There was enough material to make one loop, and when I put it around my neck, it comes down my chest a bit more than the tutorial scarf, which I think is due to difference in yarn and the looseness of my stitches. So I didn’t need two balls of yarn.
But this was absolutely fantastic and super easy to follow, I’m so excited!! I’ve never knit in my life and was able to do this in about 45 minutes, but next time it will be much faster. Thank you!

This is so AWESOME! I have a wonderful daughter in law who wants a big bulky blanket knitted but did not have huge knitting needles. THIS WORKS!! I have knitted since I was 5 years old. Where is world did you get this idea? Wow!! Impressed! Also now I know what yarn to use too. I was wondering if Bernat Baby Blanket yard would work also. It’s Super Bulky also and very soft. I showed my wife arm knitting. I suggested that using old clothes of similar colors (from the Good Will) you could wind up with a wonderfully colorful area rug in relatively little time.
I think I’ll be making one of these very soon just because it looks like an awesome way to recycle old fabrics.

i was completely frustrated with the first video but then the next day i decide to try again and after some trial and error i completed my first scarf although its a little snug cause i ran out of yarn. the first one i made was a little bit um… interesting but still cool and im motivated to try again and hopefully end up with a beautiful scarf like yours thanks for the inspiration

I just made one, it took me one episode of Dexter haha! I used Lion brand wool ease “tigers” which is a black/white striped with solid black mixed in. I think I made it a little too long but that’s ok because it looks amazing! I almost used both 87 yards and probably should have stopped earlier but you know when you knit and watch shows you kind of lose track! Anywho, I’m going back out tomorrow and getting some more so I can make a bunch of them! Thank you soooooooooooo much for this wicked easy video!
Hi, your scarf looks great and the tute was so easy to follow, I have just one part (of my knitting) that I’m not happy with. When it is finished the stitches pull very easily making long loops in the scarf which doesn’t seem practical. If maybe you catch a stitch with your fingers as you put the scarf on, or baby gets their little fingers in a loop or something similar the the scarf is spoiled although I have seen the arm-knitted baby blankets so obviously it must work. I must be missing something somewhere along the line, any idea what it might be? Thankyou.

I don’t understand I can’t get past the first stich.
I had an issue, but watched the first stich many times over and figured it out. It is a bit hard to see the first time, but you need to make sure you are putting your hand under the string that goes over the top of your thumb and over the thread that goes on the backside of your thumb. I hope that helps!

Hey, great tutorial! I just need some clarification on one thing! When you start the knitting process and are switching from arm to arm, I see for the very first loop you put your hand through the back, and the remaining loops you put your arm through forward. Is it essential to twist only the first loop, or does the direction you put the loops on your arm not matter?
Ive made two of these now, one with thin yarn ( the first one) and one with super bulky. I thought my problem was because of the thin yarn and that’s why I tried again. My first problem is that when I do my switch from one hand to the other, I can’t get the yarn to tighten so I’ve got all of this extra on the sides by the end. I’ve tried leaving the extra and tying to tighten. The tying looks fine but either thing I do leaves me with my second problem… While wearing the scarves, something inevitably pulls (not even hard) on a loop and it won’t tighten back into the knits so I’ve got all these random stings hanging there!!! HELP?!?!?!?

Just made this scarf and am in love! Found some amazingly soft thick yarn and I went with the 12 stitches across. It is a bit thick so the next time I might scale down to 8 stitches across, but there will be a next time! Thinking of making these as holiday gifts!!

Yes, I would recommend 5 or 6 stitches and long enough to wrap just once.

I have thick yarn from Walmart and for the past 2 nights I’ve been trying to make one of these. I have done 12 stitches in width but I haven’t been counting the length as I’m doing it. and one strand of yarn keeps running out before I finish and it messes the whole stinkin thing up! any ideas why? maybe I’m doing it too long? or should I do less stitches in width?
Hello, measure the length by wrapping it around your neck. Once you have the desired length, bind off. Be sure to leave enough yarn to bind off and sew the ends together.

I found this accidentally and I’m so glad I did! I had one skein (42 yards)of super-bulky, space-dyed yarn that I bought because I had to have it….and then looked at it for more than a year wondering what on earth I could do with only one skein. After watching your video twice, I cast on 6 stitches and went to town. By the time the yarn was running out, I had a rectangle about 20 inches long. I whipped together the ends, using the tail as you’d suggested, and it’s a perfect circle scarf to pop over my head. Now I must get more bulky yarn to make more…..
I am wondering what would happen if I raid my yarn stash and run about 6 strands of different yarns through my spinning wheel in an attempt to make my own unique bulky….? I’ll let you know how it works!

This rocks!! I have crocheted for Yeats but never tried knitting, and wanted sdomnething creative to do at night where I didn’t have to count rows or stitches. Just finished my first one and I love it! Used one strand of the thick n’ wooly (or whatever was referenced above – my wrapper is gone) and I used less than one skein. Used a dark navy color and and very excited to wear this for the rest of winter! The perfect thing to wear in my cold office when a regular scarf just isn’t nice enough. Your video was so helpful. I’ve made a few scarves a already, but I’m having some trouble. When I begin stitching onto my other arm and get to the end, my last stitch is very big and elongates the scarf, and when I finish the scarf the ends are not the same width. I’ve tried tightening the stitch but it doesn’t seem to work. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong. Any ideas would be great. Thanks.

Hi Maggie, just wanted to thank you for posting this (I realize I’m a year late!), I’ve been wanting to learn how to make these scarfs for a while, and your tutorial was great and super easy to follow! I made two yesterday in less than an hour (I made one and when my daughter saw it she begged me to make her one too), and I am in love with them! I mixed different yarns instead of using two strands of the same, and the results were amazing! I wish there was a way to show them to you, but I don’t have a website or anything I can link here!
I have gone crazy making these scarves. So much fun and sooo hard to decide which color of yarn to get. So many to chose from. I have been making some with the Lions Brand Hometown. Just used Azalea in that line and it made a very fun, multicolor scarf. I am also wondering the same thing that Jordan asked about. If going from behind the loop as opposed to going through the front side makes a difference when switching arms.
I finally got around to making my own scarf using the technique from your video. I didn’t do the cowl version and only did one skein but I liked how it turned out. I will be trying it with two skein when I get more yarn. Thanks for the tutorial! I linked to your tutorial on my blog post.

I knitted almost the whole thing perfectly then went wrong on one little bit so tried to undo it and then it started coming apart and didn’t know how to fix it so had to undo the whole thing!!! :'( So traumatised!!!

I had lion brand country loom yarn that I bought to crochet an infinity scarf and I was having the hardest time with it. I tried for hours and never figured it out. I’m more familiar with knitting, but like you said it is so time consuming! So this post made me super excited! I only used one thread instead of two because the yarn is a little bulkier. I don’t really understand your question. I use two strands. One from each ball of yarn. Cast on 12 stitches and knit however many rows you’d like until you get your desired length.
I have the same problem… I don’t know where to start! For example, if you unwind 2 skeins of yarn until they are straight lines, where do you begin the slip knot? In the middle, or towards the end?
Can you tell me how to make it stay flat. I just went through your tutorial today and made my first scarf which I totally love the curl but would also like to have one lie flat. Love your site.

Question– is it possible my arms are too big? I know in real knitting as the gauge of the knitting needles gets bigger, the stitches get bigger. Could the same thing be happening with arm knitting? I’ve tried it but my stitches are just huge even though I tighten each stitch. I’d love to hear your thoughts!
It definitely makes a difference. The larger the are, the larger the stitch.
hello! i really wanted to make this scarf (really, i want to make the blanket, but using the scarf as practice).
when i tried to make it though, i kept having issues at this on point, i followed the video many times and started over a few dozen times… when i cast on, and then start to do the actual knit part with my other arm, it starts to pull… and when i get to the last stitch, there was excess yarn that i couldn’t pull tight. in other words, the last loop is unusually large and i can’t tighten it. does this happen to a lot of people? how do i fix it or what am i doing wrong to cause this?

Hi Maggie, I finally learned how to arm knit!.;) but I’m have a hard time when I’m knitting, the yarn between my two hands is loose even though I try to tighten it. Also, after my final casting, the last loop is very loose. Not sure where I’m going wrong. I’ve been watching your video and following your steps as you go. Thanks for your great idea and very cute!

I loved this video, very easy to follow. I made this scarf in less than 35 minutes and as a crafty girl that would typically crochet with a hook, I found this a wonderful method and very quick for a last minute gift 🙂

I can knit using needles (not very well, but I can do it) but for some reason, I found arm knitting quite a challenge initially. Apparently skeins are not created equally!! I was only able to get about 10 rows, not even enough for a single loop and it was as tight around my arms as I could get. For the double loop infinity could you tell me how many yards you used? Also for the double loop could you do just 5 or six stiches?
You can certainly do 6 stitches for the infinity scarf. Also all skeins come with different amount of yarn. I use approximately 105 yards for my infinity scarf. It will be a bit less if you do less stitches.
I have been having trouble with my scarves. will cast on 10 on my right arm, then cast off 10 onto my left. Everything is fine until that point. Each cast off and cst on that I do after this the edges all have such large loops at the end. I can still make the scarf but it looks terribly uneven and each row has a long line large loops along the entire length of the scarf. Tension is not the issue, because a lot of the time I can literally be cutting my circulation trying to get the yarn over my hand. Other times the yarn is very loose when I try too slip it over. I tighten it on the casted on arm but again it will get tight as a rubber band and still there is a long loop hanging between my wrists. I do not have access to bulky yarn so I am using regular yarn. Could that be the problem?

I just followed your video for the infinity scarf for the first time and I love it! I had some hang ups getting started but once I got it it was great!! I used a bulky yarn and about 30 rows and its a little smaller than I’d like for an infinity but will work! I’m just happy I did my first one thanks to you! thank you!

First I want to say I love your videos and they’ve got me very excited about arm knitting. I’m trying out this particular pattern using some yarn I had around the house (before going to by a similar yarn to what you use) and I find myself struggling with the actual knitting part (switching from arm to arm). It could the yarn I’m using but I’m struggling to get the stitch transferred over and keep it tight. By the time I’ve got it over to my left arm, its a jumbled mess. Any advice?

I am trying to stitch the ends together to make the infinity part,but failing. Two questions… How do I tell what is inside out on this? And I can not see the V to stitch through but I am casing on just like the video what am I doing wrong?
I love this! I first arm knitted with double yarn, as shown, but my skein was smaller than yours. I could not make it long enough to double. It’s okay, though, because it fits like a cowl.
I made the second one yesterday without using both ends, just a single yarn. I used the whole skein, same yarn as the first attempt, and did not sew the ends together. It is long with big, airy loops. It is so soft and I like the feel of wrapping it around my neck many times.
This is so much fun and so fast! For those of us who love immediate gratification, this method is much better than traditional knitting.

I have a few questions great scarf, by the way!
So I think I read you used not even half of both skeins of yarn for this scarf. Have you used more than that and made one extra Chunky? How did it then out if you did.
The directions for the cuff that goes with this scarf calls for different yarn in the color linen – so which is best? Or does it go well with the scarf and not matter.

Hi Tessa. You can use one skein of Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick to make a scarf and a button cuff. If you want a chunkier scarf use a third strand of yarn (making it 3 strands at one time) and cast on more stitches.

I need some help… I like your video– good explanations and visual. However, I have watched 2 other videos and I still can”t seem to figure out how to tighten the stitches so they are more uniform. Actually, all the stitches are way too loose and especially the final one every row. I end up with some rows having huge gaps.
When I knit with needles, I have to be careful to make my stitches the same tightness each time, but at least with the needles I know which yarn to pull on each time to tighten the loose ones.
With arm knitting, I can’t seem to pull the correct yarn to tighten- whether the tail end together with the working yarn end OR ONLY pull on the working yarn plus pull on the stitch that is being released while forming the new stitch onto the other hand. No matter what I do, I end up with hugely loose stitches on the new hand.
Can you clarify how to pull , what to pull, in which direction to pull to tighten (close up) the gap from the old stitch to the new stitch?

Hello. Only pull on the working yarn to tighten the stitches. Make sure you are turning your stitches the correct way when plaving them on to your arm otherwise the stitches will be twisted and then hard to tighten. Good luck.

Hi Maggie. I just saw your tutorial for the arm knitting and I think you are a super good instructor. I noticed that a lot of people referred to you using 2 spools of yarn for 1 scarf, but the video I watched you just used 1 spool and worked from the center tail and the outer tail. Is that right, or did they watch a different video? Thank you so much for sharing your talent. I have knitted tons of afghans but never heard of arm knitting. I used knitting needles. 🙂
