2 1/2 years into owning this home and the kitchen is 100% done! It’s about time! Moving into this home we thought we were just going to keep the old cabinets and paint them. Well! We then found out that there was no getting rid of that old smell inside of them. Even 3 coats of polly didn’t take care of it. So down they came! And out came the floor. And the counters and half of a wall taken out as well. Ha Ha. They say if you’re going to put money into a room be sure to spend the most on the kitchen and bathrooms. Well, that being said, this is not one of those “get it done under 500.00!” remodels. We did a little splurging. I really don’t have numbers added up but we splurged on some things and saved on others and the kitchen turned out to be just what I hoped and more!! Here is a before and after shot of the kitchen.
There you have it! Look at those nasty green linoleum floors! And don’t even get me started on the minty green counter tops and old appliances. Yuck! This was NOT an easy fix.
Here we are after we pulled everything out! That includes cabinets, plaster, insulation, plumbing and electrical.
After finishing the electrical and insulating we hung the plywood. The plywood made it easier to hang the cabinets and we knew once they were up they weren’t coming down!
Now came the time to hang the cabinets! It was a long process….a week or more actually. When you work full time these projects take extra long! But I was patient.:)
We then added the doors and hardware which I never want to do again in my life and then we hung the paneling back up. Yep! We reused the old paneling. We just painted it a nice creamy yellow and it was as good as new!
Now for the good pictures!
We stuck to all white appliances. Keeps everything looking bright and clean!
Our yellow light we found in the basement after moving in. It was green and I love yellow so I decided to give it a paint job and put it to good use above our island!
For the shelf below we used an old piece of wood I believe we found in the back yard. Adds a nice touch and a bit of charm to what would just be an empty wall without it.
And that is our completely remodeled kitchen that I can’t believe we did on our own!
Some more things we added were the under cabinet lights, recessed lights in the ceiling, lights in the two corner cabinets…
Find out how we built our counter tops for dirt cheap!

beautiful and a lot of hard labor and sweat and blood & lots of memories…
Your butcher block countertops are GORGEOUS! I would love to know how you made them!
Thank you so much! I was just telling my husband I need to get going on that counter top blog post! It will be up by the end of the week:) I’ll explain in detail how we made them and how much we spent. Check back!
I absolutely LOVE your kitchen!!! The layout – cabinets, dishwasher, stove, sink, etc. – is almost identical to mine and I totally love the countertops! We have ’80’s yellow fomica, which I really don’t mind, but I wind up with a puddle next to the sink every time I turn on the water it seems. I’m so ready for a re-do. However, the carpet had to go so the floors must come first. 🙂 I can’t wait to see your post about your countertops!
take care, Susan
You give me hope! My kitchen is almost identical to your old one, cupboards are the same, even the hardware. Your end is alot what I want too, light cabinets, dark counter. I love love love your little table/island too! Did you put the counter top material on it too? What did you do for flooring? We are thinking of hardwood but it is pretty pricey. So much work but your end result is beautiful! Thanks for the inspiration 🙂
Hello there! Thanks for the compliments! The island we used what was already on there for wood but we used the same stain. It came out a bit darker because the wood soaked it right up but still looks very similar. Good luck with you’re kitchen! They tend to be the most expensive to renovate other then a bathroom but it’s totally worth it.:)
Oh and for flooring we went the cheap route and compromised. We did greyish/white ceramic tiles. They were on sale and anything was better then the green linoleum:) We plan on doing brick flooring down the road.
I love your kitchen! Your website as well. Found you on Pinterest and will be checking back for new posts. I will be trying to arm knit a scarf so I can have it down come winter!
Thank you so much!
I love your kitchen and love that the counter was cheap. I have been looking at simalr white kitchen. Can I ask the reason for not a main backsplash? I was looking at this idea but with a blue glass backsplash, what are your thoughts on that? I also like that you have the white appliances, I was worried with white cabinets white appliances would be too much.
Well done! We’re just finishing up our reno with concrete countertops. You’ve got me thinking about redoing one of our older concrete sections (4 ft long) with a butcher block section.
Beautiful! Thanks for sharing.

Hello. I have a blog post under the DIY section of my blog.
Your house is beautiful!
What do you and your hubby do for a living?
Hello! Thank you very much 🙂 I am a part time nanny and part time blogger and my husband is an electrician.
Do you happen to know the paint colors you used? We are doing a yellow and white (off white)kitchen. I came across your pics of your kitchen and would love to get the beautiful results you got.
I believe it’s called cozy cottage or cottage white by Behr.
I just ran across your blog but cannot find your post on how you made your counter tops. Would you mind giving me the post date?

Beautiful!!! I would love to attempt the countertops but it would be me doing it all by myself…scared! What material is your undermount sink and is faucet black?
The sink is hammered copper and the faucet is bronze. Good luck!

stunning kitchen makeover. I really like the benchtop and how the sink is undermount set. Great work.
It’s funny- my husband and I are doing a very similar reno in our kitchen. Before it looked very much like yours and we had to completely gut everything. Even the floor was rotten through. I love the way yours turned out and we are going for a similar cottage look. I think we will do exactly what you did for the kitchen counters. A beautiful solution that is cheap and doable. Thanks for the post! Hopefully I’ll get the chance to post about our kitchen one day.
I absolutely love your countertops and the kitchen remodel. I have been contemplating butcher block for my kitchen for a while and am totally in love with the wide plank look! Do you worry about the poly yellowing or bubbling/cracking over time? Particularly near the sink where it will be wet from time to time?
Hi there. Haven’t had any issues like the ones you have mentioned.
Love the way your Kitchen turned out! I was wondering where you purchased the cabinets from? Any idea on the total cabinet cost? Thanks!
Hi Ally. Thank you! We purchased our cabinets from a local kitchen designer. Here is a link to his kitchen website http://www.westchesterwoodsfurniture.com/pages/Kitchen-%26-Bath.html

I love what you did with your kitchen! I want
To do the same thing in mind. But I don’t want to take everything down. How can I refinish everything without doing that or is that impossible? Thanks a bunch.

Enjoyed seeing your home..what flair!
The funny thing is, I have that exact same kitchen (the before one)
I would have just painted the cabinets, replaced the hardware, and added new counters and flooring. I like the vintage cabinets. It would have saved a bunch of $$$
Not if you had smelled them! Haha. We tried that and that smell was still horrible.
We are in the middle of a kitchen remodel (a slow 1 year long do-it-yourself one 🙂 ) and your blog is very helpful! Right now I’m struggling with lighting. I HATE the harsh direct orange-y glow of lights in our kitchen and it looks a lot like your old kitchen. What kind of new lighting fixtures and bulbs did you install to get such great lighting results?
What is the paint color on your walls? I love it! Beautiful job.
Cozy cottage I believe. Thank you!
This is very odd but your old kitchen is identical to our kitchen when we moved into our house cabinets floor layout ….. creepy !!!!!!!!!!
Hi Maggie. So happy I found your blog! Quite a bit of time has passed, so curious if you’re still happy with with your wood counters. Any issues? My husband and I agree that even if we decide in a few years we no longer like them it wouldn’t be a huge deal considering the cost of the project.
What size is your kitchen? And is the dining room on the far end of then kitchen? We are planning to remodel our kitchen and after taking out walls, we will have a 12×12 kitchen. Everyone tells me we won’t have room for an island but yours seems to fit well. I’m trying to get perspective. Thank you so much. Great job by the way! Oh, and would you do anything different? I’m in the planning stages now.

Maggie, do you know who built your house? I’m in Southern California and the before photo is almost identical to my current kitchen which my great grandfather built. Even the hang above the window looks like his hand carved towel racks. It is eirie.
These are my kitchen cabinets – house build in 1960,s.
Could you please let me know where you purchased the hardware? Thank you so much

I love the butcher block counters. We live in a small cabin up in the mountains and I want this in my kitchen. My sweet hubby is a handi man and he is going to do these for me. It has taken us over a year to decide what direction we wanted to go for our kitchen. I love yellow too and we will paint the walls yellow, but after we get the stairs made built for the access to the loft. I will paint my kitchen cabinest white to stand out clean and bright. Thank you for your beautiful ideas .
