I have had so many requests for this stitch using the arm knitting technique. So here is an easy way to knit a chunky throw using the basket weave stitch!
You use knitting and purling to create boxes of stockinette and reverse stockinette. You don’t need any needles! All you’ll need is super chunky yarn, a couple of hours and your arms!
Materials:
11 Skeins of Couture Jazz yarn in the color Denim
Pattern:
Pull a 5 foot strand from your first skein of yarn.
Make a slip knot and cast on 21 stitches using the long tail cast on method.
Rows 1-4: Knit 3, Purl 3 across the rows.
Rows 5-8: Purl 3, Knit 3 across the rows.
Rows 9-12: Knit 3, Purl 3 across the rows.
Rows 13-16: Purl 3, Knit 3 across the rows.
Rows 17-20: Knit 3, Purl 3 across the rows.
Rows 21-24: Purl 3, Knit 3 across the rows.
Rows 25-28: Knit 3, Purl 3 across the rows.
Rows 29-32: Purl 3, Knit 3 across the rows.
Rows 33-36: Knit 3, Purl 3 across the rows.
Bind off.
Weave in the cast on and bind off tails.
When adding on a new skein of yarn, use a double knot to secure it to the working yarn. Pull it very tight and cut the excess close to the double knot. I show this in the video when adding on the second skein of yarn.
*The total cost of this chunky throw is around 76.00. Shipping is free at the link I provided above!
The finished measurements are approximately 3 1/2′ x 5 1/2′ un-stretched.

Hi Maggie
It looks as though on the 1st stitch of every row you come in from the back of the stitch to place on your other hand but then all the other stiches you come in from the front. I’m pretty new to knitting & was wondering if there was a reason for doing it this way.
Thank you for all your tutorials : ))

Love this pattern! Thanks for sharing ?
I’m hoping this works on my big chunky needles skipping the long tail cast in.
Love this pattern? Can I use Bernat Roving yarn? If I do should I do the 3 strands?
I just learned how to arm knit and how to do a purl stitch. I tried this blanket and it came out with a lot of holes, do my stitches need to be tighter on my arm? Any suggestions would be helpful since I’m just learning.
Hi Maggie! If I want to make this to fit my king size bed do I just cast on more stitches and continue your pattern? Thank you.
I would say so but just make sure the number of stitches you do is a multiple of three! So that when you’re doing your three knit and three purl you don’t end up with a wonkey amount!

I’m obsessed and want to do this! Have no prior crochet experience though. Of your tutorials I’ve watched, the blankets are only about 3′ wide, which is about what you can fit on the length of your forearm. What do you recommend to make the blankets wider, to be more square overall? Stitching panels together somehow?

Hello, Maggie, and thanks for all the info! I am planning this basket weave blanketaas my first project and wanted to make sure I had enough yarn. I-m using Bernat’s Sophia Knit or Knot and had the same question as some of the others: how should I figure to add hanks of yarn to make the blanket bigger?
Thanks again as I wouldbe hopelessly lost without you!!

I must say it was hard to find your website in search results.
You write great articles but you should rank your website higher in search engines.

Hello, wondering if I could do this in two colors? Would that be hard to do?
